Spring has Sprung. Landscape & Gardening Activity Begins.

Guidelines for Gardening in spring readiness
Spring tree care focuses on recovery, root activation, and new growth, transitioning trees from dormancy to active metabolism before buds fully open. Effective care is condition-based rather than date-based, adjusting to local climate variations from late winter in the South to late spring in the North.
Inspection and Pruning should be the first steps to identify and remove dead, damaged, or diseased branches ("the Three D's") and clear winter debris like fallen leaves and mummified fruit. This cleaning reduces pest and fungal risks while preventing the spread of disease as temperatures rise; structural pruning for most deciduous trees is best done in late spring as leaves unfurl, though deadwood removal is safe year-round.
Soil and Nutrient Management involves applying a 2-4 inch layer of mulch (avoiding "mulch volcanoes" against the trunk) to retain moisture and regulate temperature, followed by fertilization once soil temperatures rise to support root expansion. Watering should be deep and infrequent (approximately 10 gallons per inch of trunk diameter) to encourage robust underground roots, while ensuring the root flare remains exposed to prevent rot and allow for oxygen exchange.
Timing: Adjust tasks based on local conditions; spring begins earlier in warmer regions and later in colder climates.
Mulch: Keep layers 2-3 inches deep and wide, ensuring no contact with the tree bark.
Fertilization: Use slow-release, species-specific fertilizers to avoid rapid, weak growth.
Weeding: Remove competing plants like ivy and lawn grass within the drip line to reduce competition for water and nutrients.
Professional Help: Consult a certified arborist for complex pruning, hazardous branch removal, or if significant winter storm damage is observed. ARCO Tree Experts will be ready to serve your unbiased Tree Assessment (TRAQ) or met your other concerns regarding your trees.
